The Zen Cottage
OUR HOME
The Cottage
The Seaside Zen Cottage is one of the oldest beach homes on all of the Kona Coast. Sometime in the early 1900's Dr. Phillips purchased a "surplus" teacher's cottage in Hilo. He had the house dismantled, put on a truck and reassembled right in front of the beach. We have kept its historic look while, transforming it into a tranquil Zen cottage.
Living Room
The open living & dining room looks out onto the ocean. Large windows capture the sea and mountain breezes, keeping the home cool throughout the year. It is a truly unique feeling to be able to smell the flowers and sea salt from inside the house. There is Internet, Cable Television, DVD player & Board Games.
Overview
We want to share the amenities and uniqueness of the Seaside Cottage. The three bedroom, three Bathroom Seaside Cottage is Ohana living at its finest.
'A'ohe pueo ke'u, 'a'ohe'alae kani, 'a'ohe 'ulili holoholo kahakai. No owl hoots, no mudhen cries, no 'ulili runs on the beach. There is perfect peace.
Dining Area & Kitchen
The cottage has a fully apportioned working kitchen with a refrigerator and gas range. There are a number of support appliances, such as a coffee maker, grinder, microwave, toaster, juicer, pots, pans, knives, cutlery, and dishware. The Washer and Dryer are located on the first floor.
Upstairs
The cottage has an open, flowing floorplan that takes inspiration from Japanese shoji rooms. Each of the bedrooms can fully open to create one large space with flowing breezes. In the evening, they can be closed off for privacy.
Veranda
The first two bedrooms open directly out onto a gracious veranda. The balcony is wide enough to sit and read, or enjoy a sunset cocktail while you take in the 180 degree views of the coastline.

Bedroom One
The bedrooms in the Zen Cottage are like no other. They sit as close to the ocean as just about any home on the island. You can smell the sea spray from the bedroom. They are apportioned with a king bed. Bedroom one has a wall mounted dresser and a shared hanging closet.
Bathrooms
While the original cottage relied on rainwater and a well to supply the bathrooms, we have updated to modern amenities. There are two bathrooms upstairs. The first bathroom has a large, walk in shower with a sitting bench. The back bedroom has a bathtub and shower combination.
Downstairs, the bathroom features a very large standing shower and doorway access to the outside.
Beach, Lagoon & Sunsets
A small sandy semi protected lagoon sits on the doorstep of the Zen Cottage. This small beach is perfect for playing in the water. The rocks on the point absorb large wave energy, and cause the sand to accumulate on the beach. Many of the Robertsons learned to swim in the calm waters. Reef fish like tang, parrot fish, puffers all like the protected waters and make the spot an ideal snorkeling location.
At the end of yoru day, sit and enjoy the spectacular sunsets.
Bedroom Two & Three
Bedroom two is a mirror image of bedroom one, and it enjoys gracious views of the coast. For two couples, they can open up the doors and use the third room as a shared space, or it's perfect for parents and their kids. Bedroom three has its own en-suite bathroom.
Pai Pai & Lanai
The large, covered Pai-Pai stretches across the lawn. We designed the house so you could spend your entire day right next to the oceam, but covered from the sun.
Enjoy your morning coffee while seated in this comfortable oversized couches, or take a nap on the shady daybed. Grill locally caught fish on the four burner gas grill. Dine overlooking the water from dining table.

“It's hard to put into words what a beautiful place this is... Every day we went to bed and woke up to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach. I honestly have never slept so well in my life. Plus we saw plenty of turtles up close, right on the beach, and whales breaching right off the coast (unbelievable).

The most wonderful place in the world because this is where I got married 15 years ago. Amazing setting, incredible views, fantastic houses.... we loved it so much we came back and rented the cottage again and loved it all the more. A secluded lagoon and keiki pool, sea turtles and rays, beautiful birds and the endless blue ocean.

“We rented both houses for a week around 8 years ago for our wedding. We have sooo many beautiful photographs of the wedding and events leading up to the ceremony. So many views. The posted photos of the house are very accurate. We had every bed filled but it never felt crowed. Lots of space for everyone to wander, rest, swim, read etc. Many "nooks" to nestle into. The house and site was beautiful but more importantly very comfortable. Wonderful venue that should be seriously considered."
